Well, after 2 weekends of prep work, many hours spent on deciding on the paint color, 5+ trips to Home Depot, and 2 1/2 hours of painting, the room is painted! Yes, it does sound like way too much work was put into this project, but neither Brad nor I had painted a room before, so we had some learning to do along the way. The hardest was definitely picking the color though. Even the night before we still weren't sure as Meg, Bret, Brad, and I sat in the room staring at the 3 samples on the walls for an hour.
I had been back and forth the whole week before on the color we had chosen. I loved it on the sample card, but hated the actual color once we got the sample at HD - it looked waaaay too orange for me. We were going for more of a brown to fit our Jungle theme. So, while we were still in the store we picked a 2nd color, bought it's sample and headed for home. Came home, Brad painted a strip of the 2 samples on the wall, and there we sat, and sat, and sat, pondering over them. He put the 2nd color down first, I loved it. Then he put the 1st one beside it...I thought oh it's not so bad, I kinda really like it, too. So there you can see where our dilemma came in. Well more mine than his because Brad was still sold on the first one. He wanted to make the decision then and there and wanted to be done with it. I, not so much. So, I walked out of the room and shut the door and didn't look at it again for the rest of the day because I knew we had a whole week until we had to actually buy the paint. I actually didn't go back in the room until Tuesday again - hated them both that day. It had to do with the lighting. The next day I was back to liking the 2nd sample more, but by the end of the week I was back to agreeing with Brad on the first one.
Fast forward to Friday night. Brad and I go back to Home Depot to buy the paint. We get all of our sample cards out again, hold them under their light samples and I still don't love either. So, what do we do? Pick out a 3rd sample! Yes, crazy I know! But, I didn't want my baby sleeping in a room that was an ugly color! So, home we go, painting a 3rd sample on the wall. Half an hour later Meg and Bret show up. We take them into the room but don't tell them our thoughts and see what they think. I'll spare you the details, but after about 45 minutes of much discussion, holding the crib set up to the samples, covering them up one at at time, we all 4 agreed the first sample still looked the best. Winner! I really did like the 3rd sample but it just wasn't the brown we were looking for to match our furniture and crib set. After all that time, I could only trust that our first sample was the one - especially after pondering over it for a whole week and picking out 2 other samples.
Brad decided to wait until Saturday morning to buy the paint, so he and Bret head out to Home Depot to get a can of our first sample. Meg and I head out shopping. After a couple of hours of shopping we decide to head home to check on their progress. By this time, Brad's brother Brian along with Drew were also there. Brian really knows a lot about painting, so Brad was happy that he came to help! Megan walked in the room first, turned and looked at me and said "that's not your color you picked out". In my mind, I freaked out! Actually, it really was though. It just looked sooooooo much different on the wall. And guess what? I loved it! It was a bit darker than I was expecting, but not a tint of orange at all. Why did I waste so much time going back and forth, when I should have just stuck with my first instinct after all!
I tried to take a few pictures but didn't get very many because I didn't want to be breathing in that paint smell for too long. I still was probably in there for longer than I should have been because I just really liked the color! :) The room is still airing out, but I am really itching to get in there and get to work. There isn't much to do just yet because we are waiting for our furniture to be delivered, which hopefully will be here by the end of this month. My mom is coming in 2 weeks to help me with the curtains and blinds, and getting some other stuff bought.
This was the weekend before when Brad was doing some sanding on the walls.
Not sure what he's doing here, but you can at least see the old color versus the new color.
Hard at work. Brad on the left - Brian on the ladder - Bret on the right.
The final product. I wasn't going to add this picture because the color looks a little different - but you get the idea. :)
Sorry for the long post but I knew it would be so funny to come back and read this some day. Moral of the story - go with the paint you liked first and stick with it!! It will always work out in the end.
